WordFest Announces details of Summer Program
The President of the Knowlton Literary Association, Mr. Philip Lanthier and other members of the Organizing Committee today unveiled their summer program to members of the media, local officials and sponsors. Please find a copy of the Press Release appended below,
__________________________________________________________________________________
Knowlton, June 16th, 2011 – The 2011 edition of the Knowlton WordFest promises to be a truly international gathering of acclaimed authors, writers, poets, story-tellers and musicians. This summer, the Canada/U-S border is front stage as the star of the “Border-line” literary festival. WordFest is also associating itself, for the first time, with the Peter Gzowski International Literacy Gala, an annual fund-raiser for literacy programs across Canada.
“We are honoured to have received so many confirmations from well-known authors
for our exciting program. All have received both Canadian & international literary honours, and a handful are having their books transformed into film screen-plays,” said Philip Lanthier, President of the Knowlton Literary Association, the not-for-profit community group which promotes reading, literacy and the coming together of French & English communities in the Eastern Townships.
WORDFEST takes place in Knowlton on July 15, 16 & 17 at several historic buildings in the village. A panel discussion entitled “The Anxious Border” will look at how the
US/Canada border affects the way we live, travel, think about ourselves and relate to our neighbours in Vermont & Maine. The panel will feature American journalists Robin Smith and Scott Wheeler, along with Canadians Danielle Dansereau and Matthew Farfan and will be hosted by award-winning CBC broadcaster Shelagh Rogers.
“Our annual literary festival appeals not only to readers, but to those who enjoy words & music as well as illustrated story-telling. We are fortunate to be welcoming internationally-acclaimed cartoonist Raymond Parent, who will be leading a workshop for children at the Galerie Knowlton. Our program also includes two evenings of the best live jazz in the Townships, with Lynne Hamilton singing bilingual border songs, to be followed the next day by more live jazz and the spoken word, featuring Stanley Lake,” noted Lanthier.
Shelagh Rogers will be talking to novelist Anne Fortier (Juliet). Kathleen Winter, best-selling author of Annabel, will be interviewed by Linda Leith. Matthew Farfan will be presenting a photographic history of the Quebec-Vermont border, and acclaimed author Sheree Fitch will show young readers how to “ Keep a Poem in Your Pocket” during a free Saturday morning workshop.
2010 winner of the Governor-General’s Award for Literature, Kim Thúy, will discuss her novel, Ru. American novelist Howard Mosher (Walking to Gatlinburg) will explain how he turns history into fiction. Well-known film-maker and director Kevin Tierney (Bon Cop, Bad Cop) will be discussing his upcoming film, French Immersion. Shelagh Rogers will be moderating that discussion as well as hosting the Sunday evening PGI Literacy Gala dinner at the Auberge Quilliams.
“This is a program with something for everyone,” said Lanthier, “and we’re looking forward to welcoming both local and out-of-town people who love books, film and music as well as anyone with an interest in our changing border with the United States. It’s going to be a lively and enjoyable weekend.”
